[Editorial] LRRK2 and the new era of Parkinson’s disease research

2017 will mark 200 years since the publication of James Parkinson's An essay on the shaking palsy. As the movement disorders community prepares to commemorate this special anniversary, and celebrates accomplishments in symptomatic treatment over two centuries, a new era of Parkinson's disease research is emerging. The integration of big data sets is paving the way for accelerated discoveries that should lead to drugs that halt disease progression, with genetics as the foundation of therapeutic discovery.
